In June, Dr. Holhoș – Romania’s leading ophthalmology network by turnover and the top choice of patients nationwide – will inaugurate the largest ophthalmology hospital in Transylvania, located in Alba Iulia. The new facility will offer highly complex surgical procedures, including, for the first time in the region, corneal transplant operations.
This investment – the largest to date within the Dr. Holhoș network – addresses a critical need for ophthalmology patients in Transylvania. Until now, corneal transplants could not be performed in the region, as such procedures require a hospital setting with inpatient care and the capacity for postoperative monitoring.

The Dr. Holhoș Hospital was developed entirely through private funding, with an investment of approximately six million euros. It features four state-of-the-art operating rooms built to international standards and offers 23 inpatient beds.
For patients, we offer all types of ophthalmologic surgical procedures, as well as reimbursements through the National Health Insurance House (CNAS).
The hospital is a multidisciplinary facility, offering 22 medical specialties: Ophthalmology, Pediatrics, General Surgery, Orthopedics, Urology, Vascular Surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive Microsurgery, Internal Medicine, Physical Medicine, Neurosurgery, ENT, Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, Diabetes/Metabolic Disorders/Nutrition, Allergology, Pulmonology, Cardiology, Gynecology, Dermatology, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Psychology and Psychiatry, and Pediatric Psychiatry.
In the coming weeks, the schedule for when the remaining specialties will become available to patients will also be announced.

Exceptionally complex ophthalmologic surgeries – available exclusively at Dr. Holhoș Hospital.
The first specialty available is ophthalmology. Once we receive the necessary authorizations for corneal transplants (a process currently underway), we will be able to offer the full range of ophthalmologic surgical procedures: laser refractive surgery (for correcting refractive errors), retinal surgeries, lens implants, intraocular lens implants, glaucoma surgery, vitrectomy, blepharoplasty, cross-linking procedures, and other highly complex operations. Corneal transplants within our network will be performed exclusively at our new hospital in Alba Iulia.
Of course, to support our patients, we have contracts in place with the National Health Insurance House (CNAS) for the reimbursement of consultations and, in certain cases, medical materials such as artificial lenses.

Four operating rooms built to international standards
The Dr. Holhoș Hospital in Alba Iulia features a state-of-the-art surgical unit built to international standards, equipped with an air treatment system that includes HEPA filtration and positive pressure inside the operating rooms. This advanced setup helps prevent hospital-acquired infections by blocking the entry of external pathogens.
“The idea of developing a private hospital stemmed from the desire to perform ophthalmologic surgeries that require hospitalization, such as corneal transplants,” says Dr. Teodor Holhoș, ophthalmic surgeon and founder of the Dr. Holhoș network. “Another reason was that, although we had reached a level of expertise that allows us to handle extremely complex cases, we lacked the necessary infrastructure — certain conditions that only a hospital can provide. Here, patients will be able to access specialized medical services without having to travel to Cluj or Sibiu, making treatment much more accessible. We’ll also be offering promotional prices, because our goal is to meet patients’ needs in every possible way,” adds Dr. Holhoș.

Romania’s No. 1 ophthalmology network
With six clinics in Alba Iulia, Cluj-Napoca, Sibiu, Turda, Mediaș, and Târgu Mureș, along with 14 optical centers located throughout Transylvania, the Dr. Holhoș Ophthalmology Clinics currently represent the largest ophthalmology network in Romania—both in terms of annual turnover (exceeding 11 million euros) and in the number of patients treated and surgical procedures performed each year. To date, approximately 220,000 patients have benefited from medical services within the Dr. Holhoș network.

The Dr. Holhoș Clinics are the only ophthalmology network in Romania that operates three units—in Târgu Mureș, Sibiu, and Cluj-Napoca—where SMILE Pro surgery is performed. This is the fastest and safest laser procedure in the world for correcting myopia or myopic astigmatism. Dr. Teodor Holhoș was the first to perform this procedure in Transylvania.
Starting this year, the procedure is also available for patients with hyperopia (positive diopters) — a first in Transylvania, offered exclusively at clinics within the Dr. Holhoș network.

Dr. Teodor Holhoș personally performs all surgical procedures.
At our clinics, all surgical procedures – including SMILE Pro – are personally performed by Dr. Teodor Holhoș, by appointment. With over 20 years of experience in ophthalmology and more than 30,000 surgeries completed to date (including a record-breaking 5,500 procedures last year alone), Dr. Teodor Holhoș is one of the most experienced ophthalmic surgeons in Romania.

Dr. Holhoș – No. 1 in patient preferences across Romania
According to the study “The Ophthalmology Services Market”, based on an online survey conducted by Reveal Marketing Research, Dr. Holhoș is the most well-known ophthalmology clinic brand in Romania and the number one choice among ophthalmology patients.
To date, total investments in the development of the business exceed 16 million euros.
