SMILE PRO technology is the future of laser refractive surgery

It is the next level of the SMILE surgery, developed in 2008 by Zeiss specialists. SMILE® PRO is only available using the Carl ZEISS Visumax® 800 femtosecond laser.

ZEISS has been known for precision and expertise in optics for more than 170 years. They developed the unique and innovative SMILE procedure, which uses a highly precise femtosecond laser system.

SMILE and SMILE PRO have several differences that make SMILE PRO visibly different from the previous version:

  • are carried out on completely different devices. Basically, for SMILE PRO a new camera, Zeiss VisuMax 800, has been invented, which looks and behaves differently from Zeiss Visumax 500.
  • SMILE PRO performs laser surgery in just 7 seconds, making it the fastest ophthalmic laser
  • SMILE PRO can also operate on plus (+) diopters or hypermetropia, whereas SMILE operates only on myopia and astigmatism.
  • SMILE PRO benefits from the high performance CentraLign eye alignment and centering system which makes it extremely safe and accurate.

What does the SMILE® procedure involve?

SMILE laser surgery
Step 1: Creating the lenticule

A small piece of corneal tissue (lenticule) and a small incision are created inside the intact cornea in less than 10 seconds.

Step 2: Lenticule removal

The lenticule is removed through the incision made.

Step 3: Correcting the refractive error

Removing the lenticule changes the shape of the cornea, correcting the refractive error.

What are the benefits of SMILE® PRO?

SMILE® is a minimally invasive incision
SMILE® Pro is a one-step laser procedure that is performed in just 7 seconds
SMILE® Pro leaves the upper layers of the cornea less affected, which reduces the feeling of dry eye or infection after surgery.
SMILE® Pro has a faster recovery, with patients able to see from day one.
SMILE® Pro is silent and odorless
SMILE® Pro is suitable for people who practice contact sports, surfing or for those employed in the military or as flight personnel.

Who is suitable for SMILE® PRO laser eye surgery?

Persons over 18 years of age, if diopters have not increased in the last 12 months
Myopic patients, those with hypermetropia or patients with astigmatism
Persons who have a good vision with glasses or contact lenses

What are the risks of SMILE® PRO laser eye surgery?

Although extremely rare, the risks following Smile Pro surgery can be related to infection and scarring. It is important to complete post-operative treatment with eye drops and checks to avoid this.
During the procedure, it can happen that in some cases what is known as aspiration loss can occur. If this happens, another type of vision correction may need to be performed. In the rare case that this happens, everything will be explained to you.
The chances of a complication are rare and are thought to be less than 1 in 5000 cases.

SEE PRACTICES AND CLINICS

Important note regarding patient consultations and surgery appointments

A patient who cancels a consultation or surgery appointment once, at least one day prior to the scheduled appointment, has the right to a second appointment under the same conditions.
If the patient cancels the second consultation and/or surgery appointment, a new appointment can be made only if the patient accepts to pay for both the consultation and the surgery in advance. This can be done either by payment order or in cash at the clinic reception.
A patient who does not show up for their consultation or surgery, who does not cancel the appointment in due time, or does not answer the clinic’s calls, may request a second appointment only if they pay for the consultation/surgery in advance.
Patients requesting an appointment for retinal surgeries or laser Prk/Femtolasik/Smile Pro must pay 30% of the cost of the surgery in advance. The appointment will be scheduled only after receiving the advance payment. If the patient is unable to attend the scheduled consultation or surgery, and cancels the intervention at least 48 hours beforehand, they will be refunded in full. If the patient does not show up and does not cancel or contact the clinic at least 48 hours in advance, the advance paid is considered to be lost as damages and will no longer be refunded.
