What do you need to know?
This device is used to examine the fundus. It is indicated for the diagnosis of retinal and choroid (the membrane attached to the retina that has a role in nourish it) disorders. It also makes it possible to observe retinal vascularization, which can be altered by numerous diseases. Many ocular disorders (retinal detachment) or general diseases such as diabetes give rise to fundus abnormalities.
The biomicroscope is used for microscopic examination of the anterior pole, vitreous and posterior pole by taking optical sections of the ocular media. Prior pupillary dilation is required and can be induced with the aid of mydriatics to allow for wider vision. Once dilation is achieved, the examination takes no more than 3 minutes for one eye. A biomicroscope with high-definition optics is needed to benefit from the largest possible visual field.
